Your rank on the search engines depends not only on how well your web pages are optimized (on-site factors) but also on how other sites relate to your site, especially with regard to linking (off-site factors).

Although link popularity is one of the most important factors in ranking a web page, it is still very important to remember that the building blocks of a website are the words on the page and without these, your site would not even be ranked.

So although the link popularity factor may get the most weighting, it is only important in relation to the title, keyword and description tags, and the keyword density of the word or phrase being searched for.

You could pay to get top search engine rankings, but there are two reasons why getting good natural search results is still very important...

Optimize the content

The most important thing is to include your keywords in the "title", and the "description" META tags in the HEAD section of your webpages - see the HTML tutorial if you do not understand tags.

Put the keywords near the beginning of these tags. Remember also however that the TITLE and META Description tags are the ones shown by the search engines as the results of a search so they must look sensible and must also make a prospective customer want to look at your site.
Never SPAM the search engines -i.e: if you are selling computers, do not put "Computers, Computers, Computers" in the keywords because search engines will pick this up and blacklist your site.
Search engine analysis is very complex and there is no way of guaranteeing that you get into the top 10 in any particular search because search engines continually change the "algorithms" which they use to rank your webpages.

The theme of your site is becoming more and more important. Because of the amount of content around, the search engines want to give users results which are most relevant, and they therefore look at the theme around which your site is built. They can recognise this "theme" by looking at the other pages on your site to determine whether you have just created a single doorway page about a topic, or whether there are a number of pages building up a theme.
