Opera has most of the performance features of IE and Netscape and is becoming quite a popular browser.

Until Version 5 you had to buy a licence however Version 5.0 was released as banner-ad supported freeware. This means that the user has to put up with banner-ads being displayed across the top in the freeware version, but it also placed Opera on a level with IE and Netscape in terms of price.

Version 3.5 had support for CSS1 and supported Macromedia shockwave.

Opera 4 and above supported HTML 4.0, XML, CSS1 and CSS2, WML, Javascript 1.3 and ECMAscript.

Version 5.1 came with integrated support for Flash.

In June 2008, the current version is Opera 9.5 and is used by around 1% of internet users according to The Counter which is a good rough guideline.
